startstone -C fails on symbol gem for repositories containing very large symbols

Symbols larger than 1024 bytes are not allowed in GemStone64, but it is possible for repositories migrated from GemStone/S 32-bit to contain such large symbols.

If your repository has been migrated from GemStone/S 32-bit and contains large symbols containing more than about 8K bytes, attempts to start up a 3.X stone for conversion using startstone -C will fail with the following error at the end of the stone log:

--- [Date/Time stamp] ---
    Starting a SymbolCreation Gem process

--- [Date/Time stamp] ---
Conversion to version 3 has failed. Please see the SymbolGem log file for more information.
GemStone will perform a clean shutdown.

Referring to the SymbolGem log you will see the following entries at the end:

[Warning]: login for SymbolGem as user SymbolUser Failed category 231169, number 2261,
